Ant Control

When ants have infested the inside of your home or business, there is obvious evidence of their burrows and entry points around plumbing, electrical outlets, windowsills, and baseboards. If you see an individual inside, there are more than likely many more unseen in walls, basements, and other hidden spaces. The species commonly found in Upstate South Carolina have a variety of nesting and feeding behaviors, and are considered pests that can cause health risks or property damage.

When found inside of buildings, they contaminate food and surfaces by carrying microorganisms on their bodies from sewage, animal waste, and other areas where bacteria and fungi are found. They can transmit E. Coli, Salmonella, Strep, and Shigellosis, among other diseases. They also attract other insects and animals that feed on them, and their tunnels serve as additional entry points for other pests.

  • Pharaoh Ants prefer colonizing inside. Because multiple queens are produced when they have established a permanent colony, they reproduce rapidly if not eliminated and excluded.

  • Odorous House Ants are known for the fruity odor they give off when they are crushed. They build their colonies in wooden structures like fallen trees and logs and use building material for inside nesting near food sources.

  • Argentine Ants are another species found inside, especially near sweet foods and drinks.

  • The pest that probably causes more property damage than the others is the Carpenter Ant. Because they chew on wood to make their tunnels for nesting, you can often find piles of sawdust below the places they have been destroying wood. They don't eat wood like termites do but they look for the same type of soft or damp material.

  • Pavement Ants are most commonly found in outdoor colonies, and they most often damage concrete surfaces like sidewalks, driveways, and foundations. Their digging causes upward pressure and also undermines the surface, either of which can deform and crack concrete. They also establish tunnels and pathways inside of buildings in search of food and moisture.

  • Red Imported Fire Ants are found in large colonies outside and are an invasive species without native predators to naturally keep them in check. They are very aggressive and attack in large groups. They are dangerous to pets and humans and have painful bites that can cause severe allergic reactions.
