Rodent Control

Have you ever wondered why the expression is build a better mousetrap? When it comes to mouse intelligence scientists, have now come up with a way to compare one mouse to another. Amazingly there is a variation of about 40% in mice where some appear to be much more intelligent than others. Coincidentally that number is the same in humans. This has led scientists on a search in the genetics of mice for one that is related to intelligence in an effort to find the same gene in humans. So if your mousetrap is missing the bait night after night, you may have just come across one at the top of the 40%. In the hierarchy of animal intelligence, for over 100 years, rats were thought to be far superior to mice, but research has caused that to fall by the wayside. It also appears that in the game of cat and mouse, the mouse is not far behind. Anyone who watches Tom and Jerry would already know that.

Unfortunately, along with their intelligence, mice and rats bring along disease and destruction. It is estimated that in the US alone, damages caused by mice and rats exceed $19 billion annually. Mice will contaminate ten times the amount of food they eat, and they are not shy about it. In May of 2021, a shopper at a national supermarket chain videotaped a mouse having a snack on deli meat right in the case. In 2003, federal agents found over 22 million pounds of contaminated food in a warehouse that was infested with rats.

While much larger and more aggressive than their mouse counterparts, rats are equally adept in the brains department. In fact, in some cases, rats outperformed humans in certain tests and tasks. Some species have been trained to perform seek and rescue missions, while others have been taught to drive. It is no wonder that these animals figure out quickly how to obtain the things they need to survive right in our homes.

A rat's teeth never stop growing, and without constant gnawing, the teeth would grow at an angle that would prevent them from eating, causing death. Their teeth are harder than iron or copper, which allows them to chew through items such as wood, cement, aluminum, cinder blocks, and most anything that is not harder than their teeth. Unfortunately for home and business owners, one of their favorite things to chew on is electrical wiring. They use the insulation for their nests and chew through the wire itself in an attempt to grind down their teeth. It is estimated the cause of 20 to 25% of unknown fires is due to rodents. The cherry on top of the mayhem caused by these rodents are the diseases they carry, such as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, tularemia, Lymphocytic choriomeningitis, the plague and over 30 more.
