Fountain Inn, South Carolina

Fountain Inn, SC

If you're the sort of person who enjoys living in a city where everyone knows everyone, then Fountain Inn, South Carolina, just might be the place for you. The city known as The Diamond Tip of the Golden Strip is a cozy hamlet of just under 8,000 people with its roughly seven square mile area split between Greenville and Laurens Counties.

Fountain Inn has the makings of the perfect place to raise a family. While some may believe having such a small population might mean a lack of community events, they would be wrong in this city. There are many public events taking place annually where residents can have fun and spend some time with the neighbors. There are farmer's markets, live music, bike, and movie nights, and holiday celebrations. From the fresh food at the markets to the jamming sounds of the bands playing, living in a small town has never been this fun.

One of the most attractive attributes of Fountain Hill just might be the gorgeous scenery located nearby. The majestic mountains dominating the landscape overlooking the city could be considered a photographer's dream. Some trails are a must-see for any nature lover. Two popular nature destinations are Cedar Falls Park and Swamp Rabbit Trail, either of which can fulfill even the most outdoors-oriented of people.

This city also has several museums, such as the Fountain Inn and the Confederate Museum. The Fountain Inn Museum has many exhibits and items, along with a ton of information about the city, commemorating its history, while the Confederate Museum provides a learning experience about the state’s Civil War Era history. Two of the more interesting places to visit are the Shoeless Joe Jackson Museum, dedicated to the local baseball great, and the Upstate Pinball and Arcade Museum. This brand-new destination is jam-packed with arcade games and pinball machines created in the 70s to machines made just a few years ago. They are set to free play and ready for your enjoyment. It is located just six short miles down the road in Simpsonville.

If you have a love of the stage, fear not. The recently renovated Younts Center for the Arts, with its beautiful seating arrangement, holds shows, orchestras, and other performances. Fountain Inn is able to call itself the hometown of one of the most interesting performers of the early 1900s, Clayton “Peg Leg” Bates, a one-legged tap dancer who was born here. The son of a sharecropper, as a young boy of five Clayton was dancing on the streets for pennies and nickels. At age 12, he lost a leg in a cotton gin accident. He did not let this kill his love of dance, however, as his uncle made him his first crude peg leg out of wood, which he taught himself how to dance adeptly with. By the age of 15, he was able to perform again, continuing to do so for the rest of his adult life. He was especially known for his unique “Jet Plane” finale, which consisted of him jumping across the stage, moving swiftly into several backward hops with a flourish.
